Joyo Kanji

In 1981, the Japanese government announced 1,945 kanji characters as Joyo kanji. This is a set of standard kanji characters which are to be used for any official/common occasions such as official documents, newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, etc. Following the ordinance, other kanji characters are considered to be unofficial and should be replaced by corresponding kana letters (either hiragana or katakana) or by Joyo kanji.
